Australia’s myGovID digital identity system has surpassed 10.5 million accounts as of 2024, representing 73% of the Australian population—up from 60% in 2023. The milestone comes as the country prepares to extend the government-operated system to private sector services following legislative changes enacted in 2024.

The Digital ID Bill 2024 and its companion transitional legislation cleared the Senate in March 2024 and the House of Representatives in May 2024, with implementation expected by November 2024. The legislation allows accredited private businesses to apply to join the system no more than two years after commencement, with private sector integration anticipated by late 2026.

MyGovID currently provides access to more than 130 Commonwealth, state, and territory services. User satisfaction rates are high: 91% of users report a positive experience, 83% find the system trustworthy, and 94% say it makes accessing government services easier.

The Australian government has committed AU$288 million to the Digital ID infrastructure. The expansion to private sector services marks a shift from the system’s original scope as a government-only credential, positioning it as a potential identity verification tool for commercial transactions including banking, telecommunications, and other regulated industries.

The adoption rate places Australia among the countries with highest digital identity penetration relative to population size, though the system remains voluntary. The two-year window for private sector accreditation suggests the government is taking a phased approach to commercial integration rather than an immediate rollout.
